Diskpart command convert RAW to NTFS/FAT32, fix RAW partition without data loss

NTFS partition is reporting as RAW file system, can we use diskpart command to convert RAW to NTFS without data loss?

What is the RAW drive?

RAW file system is not really a type of file system but presents a problem of your drive or partition. We know file system often used like NTFS, FAT32 or exFAT. So what is RAW file system? Just a system error that makes your partition become RAW and you cannot access files without any recovery software.

About diskpart

Diskpart is essentially the command-line equivalent to the Disk Management tool. Diskpart command can format, resize, extend and manage your drives and volumes.

Diskpart command can convert RAW to NTFS/FAT32 on the hard drive, external hard drive, USB drive, flash drive, SD card, memory card in Windows 10/8/7/XP, but it also deletes the data stored on that drive after converting RAW drive to NTFS, so how to use diskpart command to convert/format/change/fix the RAW drive to NTFS without data loss?

How to convert RAW drive to NTFS/FAT32 with diskpart command?

Diskpart command has a built-in format function which can convert RAW drive to NTFS/FAT32. However, formatting will erase all the data stored on that drive. So before formatting, data recovery is the first thing you must do.

Step 1: Recover data from RAW drive

To recover lost data from the RAW drive, you need to find a professional data recovery software.

4. Select the RAW drive and click Next to scan lost data.

If there are some files missing after the scan completes, return to the main interface, choose Data Recovery module and try deep scan option to find more files.

Step 2: Convert RAW drive to NTFS/FAT32 with diskpart

After data recovery from RAW drive is successfully done, it is time to use diskpart command to format/convert RAW drive to NTFS/FAT32.

1. Open Windows Start menu -> Type diskpart in search box.

2. When diskpart.exe appears in the search results, right-click it and select "Run as administrator".

3. At the DISKPART> prompt, please type list disk command and press Enter. It will display all the hard disks on your computer. Each hard disk will have a disk number, starting with 0 (zero).

4. Type select disk X and press Enter (Please replace X with the disk number).

5. Type list volume and press Enter. It will display all the volumes on the selected hard disk. Each volume will have a volume number, starting with 0 (zero).

Diskpart lists the RAW partition as unknown file system.

6. Type select volume X (Please replace X with the volume number) and press Enter.

7. Type format fs=ntfs label=volume label quick and press Enter to execute the format. If you want to format the volume to FAT32 file system, you need to type format fs=fat32 label=volume label quick.

When the format completes, you will see message showing "Diskpart successfully formatted the volume".

Convert a FAT32 drive to NTFS with diskpart

Diskpart has a convert command, it can convert a FAT32 drive to NTFS without data loss and formatting.

Step 1: Open Windows Start menu -> Type diskpart in search box.

Step 2: When diskpart.exe appears in the search results, right-click it and select "Run as administrator" to open the command prompt window.

Step 3: At the command line prompt, type convert X: /fs:ntfs (Replace X with the drive letter) and press Enter to convert a FAT32 drive to NTFS.

Unlike converting a FAT32 drive to NTFS, you need to back up the important data before converting a NTFS drive to FAT32, and then do following steps:

Step 1: Open Windows Start menu -> Type diskpart in search box.

Step 2: When diskpart.exe appears in the search results, right-click it and select "Run as administrator" to open the command prompt window.

Step 3: At the DISKPART> prompt, please type list disk command and press Enter.

Step 4: Type select disk X (Replace X with the disk number) and press Enter.

Step 5: Type list volume and press Enter.

Step 6: Type select volume X (Replace X with the volume number) and press Enter.

Step 7: Type format fs=fat32 label=volume label quick and press Enter to convert a NTFS drive to FAT32.

When the format completes, you will see a "Diskpart successfully formatted the volume" message.

How to convert RAW drive to NTFS/FAT32 without diskpart command?

Step 4: Select the RAW drive and then click Next to check and rebuild the corrupted file system.

Step 5: Check the files in RAW drive before converting RAW drive back to NTFS file system.

If there are some files missing after the scan completes, please return to the main interface, choose Data Recovery module and try deep scan option to find more files.

Step 6: Click "Fix Drive" and then convert RAW drive to NTFS/FAT32 file system. After the RAW drive is fixed and accessible, all your data will be back.

If RAW drive cannot be fixed or RAW drive is still not accessible after fixing, click "Switch to Data Recovery mode" to recover data. After data recovery completes, use above diskpart command to format the RAW drive.
