I encrypted my external hard drive with BitLocker and then I accidently formatted it. I have used few recovery software, they read all the data, but I cannot open the recovered files. Is there any way I can recover data from formatted Bitlocker encrypted drive?
The answer is YES, but it depends on whether Bitlocker metadata is intact or not. If the Bitlocker encrypted partition is accidently formatted by Windows built-in format tool under Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10, Windows OS would completely erase Bitlocker metadata (write zero) so that there is no way to recover data from Bitlocker encrypted drive which was formatted by Windows built-in format tool under Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10.
Unlike common data recovery, Bitlocker data recovery requires Bitlocker metadata and password or 48-digit recovery key to decrypt data from Bitlocker encrypted partition, while some common data recovery software (Such as EaseUS Data Recovery) which declare that it can recover data from formatted Bitlocker encrypted partition, but actually it doesn't have the function to decrypt data from Bitlocker encrypted drive, so choosing and finding a professional Bitlocker data recovery software is important when encountering the problem of data recovery from formatted Bitlocker encrypted partition.
